Q & A

What is a Public Adjuster or Loss Consultant?

Public Adjusters or Loss Consultants are employed exclusively by property owners or policyholders who have sustained a loss that would be covered by an insurance contract or policy. Public Adjusters handle every detail of a claim, working closely with the insured to provide the most reasonable and timely settlement possible. A Public Adjuster inspects the loss site immediately, analyzes the damages, assembles claim support data, reviews the insured's coverage, determines current replacement costs and exclusively serves the client, not the insurance company. Public adjusters are the only type of insurance adjuster who works exclusively for you, the policyholder.

There are basically three types of "insurance adjusters". They are...

A company adjuster (often referred to as simply the "insurance adjuster") works directly for the insurance company, usually as an employee.

An independent adjuster also works for insurance companies, but as an independent contractor. Independents do not work for policyholders. They are simply an independent agent rather than an employee. An independent adjuster could work for more than one insurance company.

A public adjuster or loss consultant, such as Pennington & Associates, is the only kind of adjuster that works exclusively for policyholders and not for insurance companies. This means there’s no conflict of interest when it comes to advocating on your behalf to the insurance company.

Public adjusters will typically contact you after a disaster. It’s important for you to know what to ask so you can distinguish established and trustworthy firms from all the others.
